Shirin Neshat: the body as identity

Shirin Neshat reveals the significance on the women’s Muslim body in Telefonica Foundation which was held as part of the PhotoEspaña event, whose theme this year is the human body. Here the body has a poetic symbolism who wears with calligraphy and the veil. The veil as representing the invisibility of women in public spaces, an element that hides her sexuality and prevents being an object of desire. On the other hand, the calligraphy represents the multiple interpretations and contradictions of culture. Thus, the beautiful images of Shirin Neshat in “Raptures” series we show the female body as a space in which representations of difference are shown through a assumed identity without stop being a own identity and overwhelmingly melancholy.

Shirin Neshat nos descubre la significación del cuerpo de la mujer musulmana en Fundación Teléfonica con motivo del certamen PHotoEspaña que este año gira en torno de la temática del cuerpo humano. Aquí el cuerpo tiene una simbología poética que se viste con la caligrafía y el velo. El velo como representación de la invisibilidad de la mujer en el espacio público, un elemento que esconde su sexualidad y evita que sea objeto de deseo. Por su parte, la caligrafía representa las múltiples interpretaciones y contradicciones de la cultura. Así, las bellas imágenes de Shirin Neshat en la serie Éxtasis nos muestran el cuerpo femenino como un lugar donde se inscriben las representaciones de la diferencia a través de una identidad asumida que no deja por ello de ser una identidad propia y abrumadoramente melancólica.
